Subject: [TAAHP] UIWRSO New Virtual Series on Optometry

Dear Health Professions Advisors,

The UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry (UIWRSO) is excited to announce our newest virtual series, EnVision Your Future: A Focus on Optometry. Given the pandemic has caused a number of disruptions in the lives of our prospective students, we recognize experience and exposure to the optometric profession has been challenging. This virtual series is meant to help bridge this gap, offering your students opportunities to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the profession. We anticipate this program to resonate with your Pre-Optometry students as well as those who are just starting to explore different healthcare careers.

This interactive Q&A virtual series will be delivered in a panel format with faculty, current students, administration, and alumni offering their unique perspectives on the optometric profession and highlighting their experiences at UIWRSO.

The Virtual Series Schedule includes:

  • Tuesday, March 2 at 6:00 p.m. – Eye Love Optometry
  • Tuesday, March 16 at 6:00 p.m. – A Wide Lens: Optometry Scope of Practice
  • Tuesday, April 13 at 6:00 p.m. – How to Prepare for Optometry School
  • Tuesday, April 27 at 6:00 p.m. – The Future of Optometry

Participation in this program will help your Pre-Optometry students meet the UIWRSO Optometry Shadowing Hours admissions requirement.

We greatly appreciate if you can forward this email and attached flyer to your pre-health professions students. They can learn more and register today at: https://optometry.uiw.edu/admissions/doctor-of-optometry/envision-your-future.html

Thank You!

DATE CHANGE: Health Professions Programs Fair is now Wednesday, March 3

Hello everyone,

Due to the weather and university closing, we have decided to shift the Health Professions Programs Fair forward exactly one week to Wednesday, March 3. The fair will still be held from 3:00-5:30 pm, and you can enter, roam around, and leave whenever you want during this time. Live representatives from healthcare and other programs will be there to talk to YOU. Why would you not take advantage of this one-on-one opportunity?

Many of you had already registered for the fair which was supposed to be held tomorrow. That is exciting and I thank you for having done so. Unfortunately, when we were forced to move the fair, it required the formation of a brand new Handshake session, and all previous registrations were lost. So you will need to register for the event again even if you already had. If you had not yet registered, well there is still plenty of time to do so.

Here is the registration link:

https://txstate.joinhandshake.com/career_fairs/23559/student_preview?token=LcodHuur93C82v5HRVCcmPLPwj93v1mFWrEcHvjfegK9IDHcr9kQbw

Attached is the list of attendees as of yesterday morning. We seem to be adding one or two each day, so this list is not final. Also, note that some schools have multiple programs associated with them. For example, Western University of Health Sciences has a medical school, a PA school, a dental school, a vet school, a podiatry school, an optometry school, and others all offered at multiple campuses. So don’t limit yourself from exploring some of these programs just based on the name they typed in when they registered. Get in there and meet them and explore!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Registrants for 2021 fair as of Feb 22.xlsx

last chance to sign up if you want a committee letter this year

Good afternoon everyone,

I know it has been one hell of a week. Hell frozen over is more like it. I hope that you and your families are well and that your apartments and/or homes made it through this mess unscathed.

If you are a pre-med or pre-dent student and plan to apply to medical or dental school this year and want a committee letter, you need to fill out this form by midnight tonight. It is a Gato form (the university’s website builder), and Gato has been in and out of service this week, so if it doesn’t submit properly the first time, keep trying! If it simply won’t submit for you, email me immediately and let me know about your issue.

Pre-Health Committee Intent Form

If you have already filled it out, no need to do so again.

I will be reaching out tomorrow by email to all who have signed up with important information, so hopefully you are able to check email at some point this weekend.

Stay safe and warm everyone – one more night and then it gets better!

Health Professions Programs Fair follow up – list of exhibitors

Hi everyone,

Sick of hearing from me yet? Sorry! As soon as I sent the email about the Health Professions Fair I got an autoreply that is scrubbed the Excel spreadsheet I had attached with the exhibitors names.

So I saved it again as a pdf and have attached it here. Apologies!

Health Professions Fair Exhibitors as of Feb 12.pdf

REMINDER: 8th Annual Health Professions Programs Fair (virtual edition) is Wednesday, Feb. 24 from 3:00-5:30 pm

Good afternoon everyone,

I wanted to send out another reminder regarding our upcoming Health Professions Programs Fair. As you know, we are not able to hold this event in person this year, but rather than having to just cancel it this year and prevent admissions officers and others from being able to meet all you amazing, wonderful Bobcats, the Career Services Center is letting us use their software to host a virtual fair. By registering for and attending this fair, you will have the opportunity to meet, live and in person, with a wide variety of admissions officers, military recruiters, test prep company reps, organization that offer scholarships and MORE! Why would you opt out of this amazing opportunity?

The fair will run from 3:00-5:30 but you can enter and leave whenever you want. Arrive at 4 pm – no problem. Only have 25 minutes until you have to get to work – no problem!

I have attached a list of the exhibitors who have registered thus far, and more are registering every day! Note that some of the schools listed here have multiple programs represented (medical, dental, PA, PT, OT, etc…)

I have also attached a flyer that you can share with your fellow pre-health friends, classmates, and student org members.

In-person visits to the campuses of programs and schools you want to apply to have all but been shut down due to COVID. But here is a perfect chance for you to talk to and ask questions of admissions officers and others. It is free, and using Handshake is intuitive and safe. Please register today and make plans to attend!

Use this link to register: Health Professions Programs Career Fair

As a personal plea, these reps are taking time out of their schedules to attend our fair. A strong showing by our students leaves a positive impression of Texas State and its student body. That is exactly the reputation we want.

Be safe and stay warm!

Reminder: Committee letter for pre-med/pre-dent students

This is a reminder for any pre-med or pre-dent students who are planning to apply to medical or dental school this year and would like a committee letter in support of their application.

Below I have pasted the initial email that went out on January 30. It contains details and the link to the form we need you to fill out and submit. All forms must be submitted by Friday, February 19. If you have already submitted the form, there is no need to do so again.

There have been some questions about how to calculate your science (BCPM) GPA, since Texas State does not do that for you, and so I have attached some guidelines for those that need them.

Again, let me reassure anyone who is planning to apply this year who is advised by Dr. Pesthy – all is well! Dr. Pesthy plans to return to work in time to write each and every one of your committee letters. All interviews will be recorded, thus she will have access to all your paperwork and your interview (plenty of details to come about that in the application workshop!!!), plus she has her own notes from previous advising appointments, so she will have no trouble writing your committee letters. I am available by email for individual questions you may have.

Take care and stay warm!
