summer advising schedules for Drs. Banta and Pesthy

Good morning pre-health students,

I have great news to share with you. Dr. Pesthy has returned to work! She is feeling great and is ready to advise again.

We have set up our summer advising schedules, and yesterday afternoon they finished troubleshooting some tech issues that had the appointment booking software offline most of the week. So you can book appointments now.

Dr. Pesthy will meet in person with students who are in the San Marcos area. You should go to her office (Supple 432) at your designated appointment time. If you cannot make it to her office in person then you should call her at the start of your designated appointment time at 512.245.9761.

Dr. Banta will hold all her advising appointments via Zoom this summer. I will email you a Zoom link the day before your scheduled appointment.

We both will resume in-person advising once the Fall 2021 semester has started.

We hope that you all enjoy a fun, restful, but PRODUCTIVE summer! Take the time to explore the health career of your choice by shadowing or volunteering or reading books/articles or watching videos. Find community service opportunities in your community and get out there and do some good for others. Make sure you take good care of your own mental and physical health too. It has been a tough year for all of us and you need to make sure you are caring for yourself as well as for others.

Regards,

Dr. Banta

better information for the health professions student fair on Friday, June 4 in San Antonio

Hi everyone,

Unlike in TRACS there is no easy way for us to forward emails to everyone on this listserv through Canvas. The ITAC folks helped me figure out a work-around using Word Press, but it is not always pretty or effective.

I am attempting to send the relevant information for the student fair I mentioned in an earlier email again in a slightly different form. I hope this is easier to work with.

Dr. Banta

The SAAHP Health Professions Fair for Students will take place on Friday, June 4, both virtually and in-person. The in-person fair will be at the Hyatt Regency San Antonio Riverwalk, and the virtual fair will take place on an online platform accessible from anywhere. This is an excellent opportunity for Pre-Health students and alumni to connect with representatives from health professional schools, associations, and organizations primarily in the Southeastern Region, with 20+ schools and programs represented so far. Pre-Health students and alumni can choose to attend virtually or in-person and registration is FREE.

A list of schools and programs in attendance is available here. Check back regularly for updates, as the list is growing!

Happy Summer everyone! You made it through a tough semester and Dr. Pesthy and I are very proud of you!

Every other year the Southeast Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (which includes Texas) hosts a conference primarily for pre-health advisors. It bounces around all over the Southeast. I am thrilled to share with you that this year’s conference is actually being held right in our backyard in San Antonio. The planning team for this conference was very passionate about making sure that students were included in this conference. SO, please see information below about a student-focused (no advisors) health professions fair that we will be hosting at this conference. Note that there is a virtual version of the fair for those of you unable to go to San Antonio. It is free but you need to register. But I am very excited that there is also going to be an in-person fair at the Conference Hotel in San Antonio. It is also free. So if you are in the area and are dying to talk to admissions officers and other healthcare professionals live and in person, please register and join us in San Antonio for a few hours. It is unlikely that students in other parts of the southeast region will travel all the way to San Antonio for this event, so you should have the exhibitors all to yourselves! Go take a selfie at the Alamo and then come by and ask questions, explore schools and programs, etc. You don’t need to dress professionally (no business suits or long-sleeved shirts with ties), but don’t show up in shorts and a t-shirt either. Khakis and a collared shirt or slacks or a skirt with a nice shirt are all fine.

I hope to see TONS OF BOBCATS at this event! I’ll be there as I am on the planning team for this conference.

Take care,

Dr. Banta
