link to a website that compiles upcoming pre-health events and final reminder for CARS workshop

Good evening everyone,

Welcome back from spring break. I do hope you had the opportunity to indulge in some self-care and that you return rejuvenated and ready to tackle the rest of the semester.

I apologize (sort of) for the onslaught of emails I have just forwarded to the Canvas site. I am completely unapologetic about wanting to make sure you are all aware of resources that could be relevant to your career development, but I am sorry that I got a bit behind during spring break and wound up sending a bunch of messages all at once. Nobody likes to see their inbox fill up that fast!

Dr. Pesthy and I hold membership in the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP). Many of the resources produced by NAAHP are for advisors, but they do have resources geared towards pre-health students. I am excited to share with you that the newest student-based resource is a site where upcoming workshops, seminars, and virtual events of all kinds are pulled together into one neat, tidy place for you all. I encourage you to check this website periodically for new events.

https://www.naahp.org/hpevents/home

Finally, one final reminder that if you want to participate in our Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) workshop, you need to sign up ASAP. Please review the email I sent out on March 10 for details, dates, times, and the registration form. It gets started at the end of this week.

No more emails tonight, I promise.

Regards,

Dr. Banta

SIGN UP NOW – Free Spring 2021 Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) Workshop

Hello Pre-Health Students,

We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting our free Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS) Workshop again this spring.

Here are the details. It is important that you read all this information carefully.

We hope that many of you will take advantage of this workshop. While both the MCAT and the DAT have content (science/math) sections, there are classes you can take to prepare for those sections. However, mastery of critical analysis, reasoning skills, and reading comprehension are also tested on both the MCAT (CARS) and the DAT (Reading Comprehension), and there are no formal classes you can take to prepare yourself for this section. That is the goal of this workshop: to provide you with tips, strategies and techniques you can learn and practice to improve your speed and performance on this section.

This workshop should be useful to students at any stage of preparation. Junior and senior level students planning to take the MCAT or DAT soon should be particularly interested in this workshop and are strongly encouraged to participate. We offer this workshop every semester, thus freshmen and sophomores might want to wait to take the workshop in the future.

The workshop is composed of three parts:

1) Classes where different strategies are introduced and explained.

2) Practice sessions designed to let you practice the strategies you learned.

3) Real, full-length practice CARS passages to let you test how you are doing.

[Pre-dental students – we are working with the MCAT because multiple practice MCAT tests are available and this is not the case with the DAT.]

If you sign up, you are expected to participate in all workshop sessions. We expect a commitment on your part to participate fully. If your schedule this semester is such that you cannot participate fully, wait until we offer the workshop again. This workshop is free for Texas State students. We will cover the cost of the instructor and all materials.

Workshop Location: For all class session, the room is Supple Rm 153.

Adherence to all COVID-19 protocols is expected (masks on, staggered seating, etc)

It is advised that you bring a laptop to all workshop section, however it is particularly essential that you bring one for the pre-test and post-test.

The workshop schedule is as follows:

Pre-Test: Saturday, March 27 11:00am-2:00pm **BRING LAPTOP**

Workshop session 1: Sunday, March 28 10:00am-2:00pm

Workshop session 2: Saturday, April 3 10:00am-2:00pm

Post-Test: Sunday, April 4 11:00am-2:00pm **BRING LAPTOP**

If you are serious about participating in the workshop, please complete and submit this short Google Form to register.

Workshop Signup: https://forms.gle/TQrG5AQ6ujafsrqE6

To encourage perfect attendance – we will give you extra MCAT practice materials from the AAMC for free if you attend ALL portions of the workshop. Rewards given out on Sunday, April 4.

If you require special accommodations due to COVID-19 please email the workshop leader Mason Bartman (mason) and copy me on the email (mb79). We will do our best to make it possible for all interested to attend and benefit from this workshop.

We need everyone who participates to agree to attend all sessions so we can compile reliable statistics to track the effectiveness of the workshop.

Contact Dr. Banta with any questions.

IT IS HERE – IT IS TODAY! The Virtual Health Professions Programs Fair – 3:00-5:30 pm

To all pre-health students,

The Health Professions Programs Fair is today. We are using the platform Handshake to host the fair virtually. We have more than 55 admissions officials, military reps, test prep companies, scholarship organizations, and more logging in to talk specifically to Texas State students and alumni this afternoon. There are reps from medical, dental, vet, pharmacy, PA, PT, OT, nursing, post-bacc, and other programs signed up. You will be the only students involved, so you are not competing with students from other universities for the time and attention of all these important people.

You can still register. You can attend ANY TIME between 3:00-5:30, so please make sure to carve out some time to attend, explore, ask questions, and learn.

Here is the registration link:

I want our university to have a strong showing today so that it doesn’t appear that Texas State students are apathetic and uninterested. Please make plans to attend and make the most of this opportunity – and show these officials how AMAZING Texas State students are!
