We hope you’ll take the time to share this important message with your students!

Health Professions Week (HPW2020) is a fun, weeklong event designed to lead you along a path to a healthcare profession. There are different events during HPW – so you can choose what content matters to you. A lot of HPW is on-demand on YouTube, so come back to learn more when you have new questions.

And, we have prizes for those who participate. But, you can’t win if you aren’t registered.

Register today so you can claim a prize! (Everyone should follow the Registration Link/Register as an Individual link on CareerEco)

Participating students can enter to win one of thirty gift cards valued at $100 each or one of eight Sallie Mae scholarships valued at $500 each. We also have 5 sets of Kaplan Subject Review Books to give away in November! It’s really simple to become eligible to win – log into the virtual fair on Thursday, November 19th from 3-8pm Eastern. Ask questions, get answers, and get rewarded!

Advisors and faculty will also be eligible to win one of ten gift cards valued at $100 when you share HPW content with your classroom or with your student organizations (either in-person or virtually!). All educators should be registered (as an individual) for HPW2020, too, in order to receive HPW Lesson Plans and activity ideas before any of the “live” events. Some materials will remain available for educators to use into winter and spring 2021.

Take our advice and make sure you are registered for the largest virtual career exploration event of its kind. “See” you at Health Professions Week, November 14-19, 2020!

Hello Dr. Pesthy,

I hope you are doing well!

My name is Alexis Poulos, I am the Area Site Manager for Provider’s Choice Scribe Services. Our company provides job opportunities for students and postgraduates who are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field and would like a part-time job while also getting first-hand experience working in a hospital. They are able to work alongside doctors and around patients in a clinical setting and are responsible for doing a majority of the doctor’s documentation. We train and provide all of the necessary tools they will need to be successful scribes.

Our company is based out of San Antonio, but we are needing scribes from the San Marcos/ New Braunfels area to work in the Christus Santa Rosa Hospital located in San Marcos.

If you could send out a flyer and our website link to apply, or know of anyone that would like to gain clinical experience in a hospital setting to get their foot in the door – that would be wonderful! I have attached below a flyer with all of the information that a potential applicant would need to know about getting the application process started, as well as our link for the application.

CARS Workshop Critical Analysis of Reasoning)

Hello Pre-Health Students,

We are pleased to announce that we will be sponsoring our verbal reasoning workshop/ Critical Analysis of Reading or CARS workshop again this fall.

Here are the details; please read both pages.

We hope that many of you will take advantage of this workshop. Both the MCAT and the DAT have content (science/math) sections and there are classes you can take to prepare for those sections. Verbal reasoning/reading comprehension is a scored section on both the MCAT and DAT, but there are no formal classes you can take to prepare yourself for this section. However, there are tips, tricks, strategies and techniques you can learn and practice to improve your speed and performance on this section. Anyone taking the MCAT or DAT this spring should be interested in this workshop. (On the DAT this section is called Reading Comprehension)

This workshop should be useful to students at any stage of preparation (applying in the 2021 application cycle). Junior and senior level students are strongly encouraged to participate. We offer this workshop every semester so sophomores should wait until next spring.

The workshop is composed of three parts:

1) Classes where different strategies are introduced and explained.

2) Practice sessions designed to let you practice the strategies you learned

3) Real, full-length practice CARS exams to let you test how you are doing.

[Dental students – we are working with the MCAT because multiple practice MCAT tests are available and this is not the case with the DAT.]

You will be expected to participate in all three components. We expect a commitment on your part to participate fully. If your schedule this fall is such that you cannot participate fully, wait until we offer the workshop again in the spring. We try to offer them every fall and spring semester. We will cover the cost of the instructor, passages for practice and practice CARS exams.

Workshop Location:

For all classes, the room is Supple Rm 153, classroom first floor.

The workshop schedule is as follows:

Mon Oct 26 6 PM – 9 PM Supple 153 for CARS pre-test; bring lap-top

Tues Oct 27 6 PM – 8 PM Supple 153 practice tests & coaching

Wed Oct 28 6 PM – 8 PM Supple 153 practice tests & coaching

Thurs Oct 29 6 PM – 8 PM Supple 153 practice tests & coaching

**TBA TBA TBA Supple 153 practice tests & coaching

**TBA TBA TBA Supple 153 for CARS post-test; bring lap-top

** These dates will be announced soon. They will fall between Nov 1st – Nov 15th and will likely be from 6-8pm and 6-9pm respectively.

It is advised that you bring a laptop to all workshop section, however it is particularly essential that you bring one for the pre-test and post-test.

We need a basic headcount for the workshop so we order enough CARs practice test codes. So if you are serious about participating in the workshop, please respond to this email with your personal information. To encourage perfect attendance we will give you a complete CARS test Vol II to practice on if you attend ALL portions of the workshop.

If you require special accommodations due to COVID-19 please email the workshop leader Mason Bartman (mason) and cc me (cp22). We will do our best to make it possible for all interested to attend and benefit from this workshop.

We need every one who participates to agree to make all sessions so we can complete statistics to see the gains of the workshop. Please send me:

A cell phone number where you can be reached by Friday, Oct 23rd, at 5 PM and

STAY CONNNECTED WITH US!

new to Texas State this school year – a minor in medical humanities

To all pre-health students,

We are excited to share some wonderful news with you. A new minor in MEDICAL HUMANITIES has been approved and is now officially available for Texas State students. It is being offered through the Department of Philosophy, but you will see that it includes courses from lots of different departments and disciplines.

This minor will give students the opportunity to take some really fascinating classes in disciplines other than the hard sciences. You do need those hard science classes of course, but this is a great way to expand your horizons and become more well-rounded and thoughtful about the role that healthcare plays in our local and global society.

If you have a science major, then this minor might be a great complement to your major if you find it appealing. If you have chosen a non-science major, then you could certainly still pursue the medical humanities minor, but you need to make sure that you budget time and space into your schedule for all the biology, chemistry, math, statistics, and/or physics classes that you will need to take depending on the type of school you want to apply to.

If you are ready to ask the question “will the admissions committees prefer this minor over other minors”, you know our answer is going to be that the admissions officers do not care what you major or minor in. So choose this or any minor because it suits YOU and your interests, not because you think that “they” would prefer it. “They” don’t care, so make decisions for you, not them.

Here is a link to information about this new minor. If you are interested in adding it or switching out your existing minor, talk to your academic advisor. Dr. Pesthy and I do not have the administrative authority to change students’ degree plans. Only academic advisors can do that. Enjoy!

Stay safe everyone – model good behavior for others during this pandemic!

Dr. Banta

Oh yeah – and don’t forget to VOTE! Early voting has started in Texas and runs through October 30. Election day is Tuesday, November 3. The polling center on campus is in the Performing Arts Center (PAC)
