call for volunteers to help out before and after the Health Professions Programs Fair on Feb. 23

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all as excited about having an in-person health professions fair as I am! Two long years it’s been. We have 60 exhibitors tabling at the fair which is pretty amazing.

I am in need of some volunteers to help out on the front end and the back end of the fair. We will stage out of LBJSC 3-14.1 rather than the ballroom.

Now, don’t you all be laughing at me because I am using Sign-Up Genius for volunteers. I am a thoroughly middle-aged mom who has been a PTO/booster club officer for 12 years now. I love me some Sign-Up Genius.

In any event, here is the link for the Sign-Up Genius. It is first come first serve until full (6 volunteers on the front end and 6 at the end).

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F084DAAA72BA46-health

Whether you volunteer or not, make plans to attend. Wednesday, February 23 from 5:30-8:00 pm in the large ballroom in LBJSC. You can arrive and leave whenever you want while the fair is on. It is free. I’d like to request that you wear a mask, but I cannot mandate this of course.

Thank you all! I couldn’t do it without your help!

Pre-dental students

Please see information in the attached flyer about the annual Dental Impressions Day hosted by the Texas A&M School of Dentistry. As noted, the event will be virtual this year, which is both good and bad I suppose.

In-Person event on Feb 23 – Health Professions Programs Fair

To all pre-health students!

Please put this on your calendar right this very minute.

On Wednesday, February 23 from 5:30-8:00 pm we will be hosting a health professions fair in person in the LBJSC ballroom.

Make plans to attend. You can arrive any time between 5:30-8:00 pm and leave whenever you want. It is free to attend.

The ballroom will be filled with admissions officers from every type of health profession that you can imagine. Most of them are from Texas programs, but not all. We will have the military branches there to discuss their scholarship programs, test prep companies, other scholarship agencies, TMDSAS, JAMP, and more! We expect between 70-80 programs to be on hand that evening.

These schools and programs are sending their people here to our campus to talk to YOU about their programs. This is an outstanding opportunity to get information straight from the horse’s mouth about admissions requirements, policies and statistics, cost to attend, licensing exam pass rates and more. It is also a great way to explore the huge world of healthcare professions that exist out there.

We will need a handful of volunteers to help with the fair, so be on the lookout for that opportunity as well.

Attached is a flyer for the fair. Share it with your friends and classmates, in your residence halls, in your club and org meetings and anywhere else you can.

I hope to see ALL of you at this fair. Last year it was a virtual event, but we are working hard to make sure it happens in-person this year. We do not want an embarrassingly low turnout of students from Texas State University, so make plans to attend.

Thank you,

Drs. Banta and Pesthy

Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) for Summer 2022

Pre-health students,

Please see information below for the current SHPEP application cycle. This program targets students early in their college career. There are multiple SHPEP sites around the country and not all health professions are represented at all sites, but there are sites available for a wide variety of health professions, including dentistry, medicine, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, and public health. Check it out! Deadline for applications in February 5.

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) staff makes every effort to provide as much information as we can to help SHPEP applicants understand the application process. Therefore, we understand the importance of regularly updating the prehealth community about our program given the integral role you play in the lives of college students. On behalf of the SHPEP National Program Office (NPO), we’re pleased to announce that the SHPEP 2022 application is now open! We hope you will encourage eligible students to apply.

As many of you are aware, SHPEP is a free six-week summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions, and the SHPEP National Program Office (NPO) is proud to announce that SHPEP 2022 will be offered as an in-person experience!

Students who apply for the SHPEP summer experience are required to follow the policies set by the program site where they are accepted and must adhere to an indoor mask mandate to participate in the program, even if fully vaccinated.

Students who participate in SHPEP will receive:

  • Housing, meals, a stipend, and travel assistance.
  • Guidance from current admissions deans, health professionals, students, and SHPEP alumni about how to pursue their profession of interest.

To be eligible for SHPEP, students must:

  • Be a high school graduate and currently enrolled as a freshman or sophomore in college.
  • Have a minimum overall college GPA of 2.5.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident, or an individual in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
  • Not have previously participated in SHPEP.

Although curricula and program dates vary by program site, each program participant will have the opportunity to spend the summer exploring a range of health careers, including dentistry, medicine, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, physical therapy, and public health.

SHPEP offers students a variety of academic and career experiences, including:

  • Academic enrichment in the basic sciences and quantitative topics.
  • Learning and study skills development, including methods of individual and group learning.
  • Clinical exposure through small-group rotations in health care settings, simulation experiences, and seminars.
  • Career development sessions exploring the health professions and the health professions school admissions process, as well as the development of an individualized education plan.
  • A financial literacy and planning workshop that teaches financial principles and management strategies.
  • A health policy seminar series, exposing scholars to current health policy issues, the policymaking process and analysis, health care financing, and the social determinants of health.
  • An introduction to interprofessional education that addresses effective collaboration across health professions.

Please visit our shpep or 1 (866) 587- 6337 (toll-free).

Below are a few resources that will help you and your students learn more about the program:

The application deadline for SHPEP 2022 is Feb. 5!

Subject: ANNOUNCING: the opening of the 13th annual Kaplan MCAT and DAT test prep competition (due date is 5:00 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 23)

Hello Pre-Health Students,

Drs. Pesthy and Banta attend state and national Pre-Health Advisor Conferences each year, and at these conferences we are given the opportunity to earn certificates for FREE test-prep courses that we can provide to our students. We make sure that we take advantage of these opportunities at every conference we attend (though one of them was cancelled this year due to COVID) and we thank Kaplan for their generosity as they continue to provide us with these certificates year after year.

And so, we are pleased to announce the opening of the 13th annual competition for free test prep courses. Only current Texas State University students may participate.

We have two certificates from Kaplan that can be used for either an MCAT or DAT prep course. Only pre-med or pre-dent students applying to medical/dental schools in 2022 are eligible to compete for these certificates.

Instructions and a link to the application are attached to this email. We HIGHLY recommend you read the instructions carefully first. A complete application requires two steps: completing the online application and submitting a transcript.

The deadline for submitting applications is 5:00 pm on Tuesday, November 23, 2021. No late applications will be accepted. Winners will be notified right after the Thanksgiving holiday by email.

Only complete applications submitted on time will be considered.

Good luck!

Respectfully,

Drs. Banta and Pesthy
